New IFI expert wind report confirms: “MSP-FR green” PV mounting system sets new standard for green roofs with significantly less ballasting
Hedingen – The proven “MSP-FR green” PV mounting system has achieved a new milestone. The latest independent expert wind report from the Institute for Industrial Aerodynamics (IFI) confirms what users have been aware of in practice for the last two years, namely that the system requires significantly less ballast than comparable solutions for secure installation on green roofs. In addition to saving labour and material, this technological superiority also exploits the complete potential for roofs with limited static reserves.
The greatest obstacle when installing photovoltaic systems on green roofs is frequently the additional load due to ballasting. In the case of existing structures, limited static reserves restrict the possibility of realising PV projects. Projects were frequently impossible to realise, or only with a restricted, less cost-effective system size.
Less weight, greater potential: The solution for sophisticated roofs
This challenge is now a thing of the past, thanks to the “MSP-FR green” mounting system. The optimised ballasting confirmed in the IFI report enables subsequent installation of high-performance PV systems on green roofs, something which was barely possible before. This facilitates maximum utilisation of the exploitable potential of a green roof. A further advantage is that the system can be installed directly on stable green roof substrates, thus dispensing with the elaborate and expensive removal of the existing structure.
Intelligent planning is the key to success
The success of the system lies not only in its sophisticated design as a further development of the reliable flat roof system, but also in its intelligent planning. As a solution-oriented partner, we assist our customers through professional consulting and our web-based Solar.Pro.Tool, optimising ballasting in every project. Important factors in this respect include the following:
- Optimised edge distance: Maintaining a specific distance from the attic reduces the wind load significantly. As a maintenance walkway, the edge distance also provides an additional important benefit, as it enables the ideal installation of a rail-securing system, such as AluTrax.
- Compact module blocks: Enclosed system layouts contribute to improved load distribution.
- Positioning the maintenance walkway: A walkway on the ridge of the installation system considerably reduces the need for ballast. The walkway can also be realised speedily by Schweizer in widths of 500/600 mm required by standards.
A system that combines safety and efficiency
“MSP-FR green” is distinguished by significant characteristics that ensure that users enjoy both safety and efficiency:
- No roof penetration: Fitting is achieved without any penetration of the roof cladding, thus conserving the sealing effect.
- Tested lightning current carrying capacity: PV flat roof systems can be used in accordance with the criteria of DIN EN 62305-3 as a component of the lightning current carrying capacity for discharging a lightning protection system. They meet the requirements of superior test class H with 100 kA pursuant to DIN EN 62561-1, thus providing audited protection that not every provider is capable of achieving.
- Integrated occupational safety: With ABS AluTrax fall protection directly integrated in the system, complete and convenient security is assured during maintenance work.
- Efficient installation: Installation is extremely efficient and inexpensive, thanks to fewer components, a high degree of pre-assembly and the sophisticated click system.
“The new IFI report is valuable confirmation of the many years of development work inherent in MSP-FR green,” says Victor Stenz, Product Manager at Ernst Schweizer AG. “It proves that we can provide our partners with a technically sophisticated, safe and, most of all, efficient solution. We make photovoltaic installation for the green roof easy while simultaneously developing valuable and, to date, unexploited potential for the energy revolution.”
